Our comprehensive and community-focused Family Medicine – Scranton Residency Program, located in Northeast Pennsylvania’s Lackawanna County, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It immerses resident physicians in our community health center in Scranton and at the community-based Regional Hospital of Scranton. In addition, various rotations, such as outpatient pediatrics, are delivered at other community health center locations in the region. This program welcomed its inaugural class in July.
Resident physicians are empowered to lead clinical and educational improvements. As part of their training, they are expected to lead or actively participate in six or more short-cycle process improvements annually. Additionally, they engage in annual Population Health and Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) curriculum activities, reinforcing their commitment to advancing community health and systems-based practice. The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education has collaborated with HealthSource of Ohio, in Hillsboro, to train outstanding family medicine physicians in rural settings with an emphasis on treating underserved populations. The program immerses residents in patient care at the largest Federally Qualified Community Health Center in Ohio, serving over 85,000 patients annually. Our program is available to both M.D. and D.O. candidates. It is a four-year categorical position that includes an integrated internship year with early exposure to Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) during the first year. We partnered with Allied Services Integrated Health System, Northeast Rehabilitation Associates, and Regional Hospital of Scranton to provide the faculty, staff, and diverse learning environments required to develop each resident’s skills and abilities.
This Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited residency program provides extensive training in the evidence-based diagnostic care and treatment of patients with disabilities in a variety of clinical settings, from minor injuries to devastating trauma. We offer a new, innovative residency and fellowship pathway that aims to fill a growing need for doctors who specialize in treating the unique health challenges that come with age. The Internal Medicine-Geriatrics Integrated Residency and Fellowship Pathway, commonly known as the Combined Med-Geri Pathway, provides an alternative route for training geriatricians by integrating the clinical experiences and competencies required of a geriatrics fellowship across the internal medicine residency. The Wright Center is one of 14 training sites across the country approved by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education to offer this unique pathway. Cardiovascular disease fellows train in community-based settings where they are immersed in a variety of organizational cultures, electronic medical record systems and varying team dynamics. Over the course of their three years in the fellowship, fellows train one-on-one with globally and nationally recognized, board-certified cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Under our distinguished faculty’s guidance, our fellows hone the knowledge and skills needed to provide state-of-the-art cardiac care, all while advancing the discipline through their own research projects and practice. The goals of the Gastroenterology fellowship are to enhance the care of patients in Northeast Pennsylvania facing gastrointestinal disorders, as well as to strengthen the local workforce dedicated to this specialty. Fellows gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology and hepatology experience, including mastery of procedural skills. Gastroenterology fellows are immersed in the community through active engagement in The Wright Center for Community Health practices, providing treatment to patients with hepatitis C.
